McGregor Bowling Lanes (9540 Walker Rd., McGregor (Amherstburg), Ontario)

Recollections (1990s, Early 2000s)

During the 1990s and early 2000s, I would occasionally drive by the McGregor Bowling Lanes bowling alley that was located at 9540 Walker Rd. (County Rd. 11) in McGregor (Amherstburg), Ontario.

I don’t remember ever going inside it.

From the exterior, I remember it having a somewhat barn-like structure, with a peaked roof and a stepped gable on the east-facing Walker Rd. front facade. I recall it being constructed of concrete cinder blocks, and I believe they were painted a light color (possibly white or light gray), at least on the front side. The building looked older and noticeably different from the outside than the flat-roofed bowling lanes in Windsor, like Rose Bowl and Bowlero.

Other Information

“Mcgregor Bowling Alley” was listed on the “Entertainment” webpage of the Town of Amherstburg website, with information like “Address: 9540 Walker Rd, Amherstburg, ON” and “Contact: Aggie Renaud” -

  • 2003-04-18: Earliest archived version.
  • 2006-05-16: Latest archived version, with an updated postal code and a fax number that matches the phone number.

There is an obituary for Aggie Renaud (December 7, 2008) from Kennedy Funeral Home Limited in nearby Essex, Ontario that states, “She was the owner of McGregor Bowling Lanes for 18 years”.

There is also an obituary for Kenneth George Bergeron (May 22, 2023) from Kennedy Funeral Home Limited that mentions, “Mr. and Mrs. B. were the well-loved and proud owners of the McGregor Bowling Lanes for many years.”

The booklet for the “42nd Annual Windsor Essex Chatham-Kent Bowling Association Youth Division Awards Banquet”, apparently held “Sunday, May 28, 2006” at the “Caboto Club”, mentions “McGregor Bowling Lanes” and the accomplishments of some bowlers from McGregor.

The “Landmark bowled over by plans for subdivision” (Hall, Dave; The Windsor Star; 27 June 2006; D6 Front) article discusses the demolition of the bowling alley:

  • Demolition started on Monday, June 26, 2006, and was performed by “Marc Gagnon of McGregor's Gagnon Demolition”, who apparently had familial ties to the bowling alley (“his wife's grandfather Bert Shepley built the bowling alley in the mid-1940s and Renaud is a first cousin”).
  • “Aggie Renaud, who has owned and operated the 10-pin alley with husband John Reid for the past 18 years ...”
  • Aggie Renaud sold it to “realtor Katherine Roth” in “September 2004”, although Renaud continued to operate it.
  • Fewer people had been using the bowling alley.
  • A residential subdivision development (“68-acre”, “91-home”) was planned for the property.

The June 2012 Google Street View imagery showed a sign for the “Woodland Trails” development -

Google Street View imagery from July 2025 showed it as an empty grass lot with some trees, and some small remnants of a driveway. The planned subdivision apparently had not been built by that time.
