Ontario, Canada Recollections

9557 Walker Rd. (McGregor (Essex), Ontario)

Recollections (Late 1980s to Mid 2020s)

During the late 1980s and into the mid 1990s, I recall traveling past a bank branch that was located in small, now-demolished building at 9557 Walker Rd. (County Rd. 11) in McGregor (Essex), Ontario, at the southeast corner of Walker Rd. and Stewart St.

I recall this structure being one-storey in height, with an approximately square footprint. It was set back perhaps fifty feet or so from Walker Rd., with a small lawn in between the structure and the road. The building was roughly the same size as the Canada Post building immediately next to it to the south, at 9555 Walker Rd.

I believe it was a branch of the Toronto-Dominion Bank, although I am not certain of that. I never went inside it.

At some point in the mid-to-late 1990s, I remember the McGregor Branch of the Essex County Library moving from its existing location at 9532 Walker Rd. (County Rd. 11) into the building. I never went into the library when it was located there.

In the early 2010s, the Essex County Library McGregor Branch moved to a newly-constructed building at 9571 Walker Rd. (County Rd. 11), and the building at 9557 Walker Rd. was demolished.

During the mid 2010s, a small park was built on the lot, and remains as such as of 2026.

Other Information

The County of Essex “2010 Aerial”, “2013 Aerial”, “2017 Aerial”, and “2025 Aerial” Base Maps from https://maps.countyofessex.ca/ depict the various states of the property:

2010, 2013, 2017, 2025 Aerial Photograph Comparison of 9557 Walker Rd. (McGregor (Essex), Ontario)

The building is still present as of the 2010 aerial photograph, but it has been demolished by the 2013 photograph. The lot appears to be grass-covered and mostly empty, with part of the driveway and parking lot at the east end still remaining. The park has been constructed by the time of the 2017 photograph, and it still seems mostly unchanged in the 2025 photograph.

According to the Town of Essex Map, the legal address of the property is “PLAN 243 LOT 7”. The Ontario Land Registry Access Historical Book Essex (12), Colchester, Plan 243, Lot 7 Abstract Index (Viewer Page 15) has an entry with registration number “667959” for a “Deed” instrument, with a registration date of “30 June 1976”, with the grantee being “The Toronto Dominion Bank”, for consideration of “$30000.00”:

The By-Laws / Pre-Amalgamation / Anderdon / 1997 / “By-law 3097 - Agreement with Colchester North re. McGregor Library.pdf” document refers to the library moving into the building, stating on PDF pages 2 and 7, “WHEREAS the Essex County Library Board is agreeable to move the library facility from the present location, being a building owned by Gertrude Meloche, to a new location at 9557 County Road #11, Plan 243 Lot 7, owned by the Corporation of the Township of Colchester North;”.

A 2002-12-12 archived version of the library branch’s webpage features a photograph depicting the building when it was used by the library. (The branch address shown near the top of the webpage, “9532 Walker Rd.”, appears to be wrong for that time period; this was the address of the previous location of the branch.)

The park is labeled as “McGregor Parkette” on the Town of Essex’s “Facilities and Parks” map.

The “New Essex Park Opens Thursday” (2016-08-02), “Striking Essex County library workers rally at McGregor Parkette opening” (2016-08-04), and “A Pleasant Addition To McGregor” (2016-08-06) articles mention the opening of the park.

There is a brief, partial view of the park from about 4:15 to 4:17 in the “Walker Road south bound” (uploaded “May 2, 2021”) video, along the left side.

Google Street View imagery from July 2009 (from Walker Rd.) and July 2009 (from Stewart St.) show the building, with it being used by the McGregor Branch of the Essex County Library at that time. The June 2012 Google Street View imagery shows the building as having been demolished, with most of the property being covered in grass, and part of the parking lot still remaining at the east end. Imagery from July 2021 through to July 2025 shows the park, with the November 2023 capture showing a “McGregor Parkette” sign on the fence near the northwest corner, along Walker Rd.
